FAQ: Are sunglasses covered by FSA/HSA?
Prescription sunglasses are eligible for reimbursement with a flexible spending account (FSA) and a health savings account (HSA).
Prescription sunglasses are not eligible for reimbursement under a dependent care flexible spending account — a pre-tax account used to pay for eligible dependent care services.
A prescription for sunglasses must be provided by an eye doctor, and the sunglasses must be used to correct vision problems and/or be designed to treat a specific medical condition to be eligible for reimbursement.
Over-the-counter sunglasses that do not require a prescription are not covered under FSA and HSA plans.
Other FSA/HSA-eligible vision expenses include:
Contact lenses
Prescription eyeglasses
Eye care co-pays and deductibles
Routine eye exams
Make sure you check with your account administrator on what is covered by your company’s FSA and HSA policies to verify what is eligible for reimbursement.
