Find a Diabetic Eye Doctor Near Me
How do I find a diabetic eye doctor near me?
The search tool (below) will automatically sort through doctors in your area and help you find an eye doctor who specializes in diabetes-related eye health.
These specialists perform diabetic eye exams and are well qualified to diagnose, manage and treat any eye-related conditions caused by the disease.
If you have diabetes, it’s important to schedule regular appointments with eye doctors. An eye doctor may refer you to a diabetic eye specialist if they notice something unusual inside your eyes.
Find a diabetic eye exam near you
Follow these steps to find an eye doctor who specializes in diabetic eye exams:
Using the toolbar at the bottom of the locator, choose “Edit Search” and use the drop-down menus to select “Visit an Eye Doctor.”
In the next box, enter your location by typing in your address or postal code. You can also press the blue circle icon on the right side of the box to find your device’s location.
In the last box, select your insurance provider. If you don’t have insurance, select “I’ll pay for myself.” If you would rather add insurance information later, select “I’ll choose my insurance later.” Once you have edited these items, you can close out of the “Edit Search” box.
Click on the “Filter” button next to the “Edit Search” button on the toolbar. A menu will appear from the right side of the page. Click the word “Specialty,” then scroll down and select the box next to “Diabetic Specialist.”
Scroll to the top of the menu and click the blue “Done” button. The search results should update automatically.
How do I schedule an eye appointment?
Once you complete the directions above, you’re one step away from booking an appointment.
By now, you should see a list of eye care practices that fit your preferences. You can also choose to look at the map view of your search results by clicking “Map View” located directly above the first eye doctor listed. From the map view, you can browse the eye doctors in your area by clicking on some of the blue markers near your location.
To schedule a diabetic eye exam, click “Book now” on the map or “Call now” on the office listing that appears when you click on a specific blue marker.
If you don’t see any blue markers, it means that the search tool could not find any diabetic eye doctors in your area. To explore other areas near you, simply press the Ctrl button on your keyboard and scroll out to get a wider view of the map and nearby locations. If you’re on a mobile device, pinch and zoom in or out on the screen to narrow or widen your map view. Then, click the white box near the top of the map that says “Search this area.”
Is a nearby diabetic eye doctor different from a “regular” eye doctor?
Most eye doctors who specialize in diabetes are called retinal specialists. They are ophthalmologists (medical eye doctors) who can perform surgery if needed.
Retina specialists are very skilled at looking for (and treating) problems with the retina, the thin layer of tissue along the back of each eye. Retinal disease is common with diabetes, especially when the disease isn’t being managed well enough.
A healthy retina is very important to your eyesight, so retinal disease can lead to vision loss if left untreated. A vision specialist may help slow or stop any damage to your eyes if there is a problem that needs to be managed.
Diabetic eye doctors near you can look for the following problems:
Diabetic retinopathy
Other types of retinopathy
Retinal detachment
Retinal holes or tears (which can lead to retinal detachment)
Problems caused by injury
Macular degeneration
Certain eye cancers
Infections inside the eye
Eye floaters
If you have diabetes and notice changes in vision or other eye-related symptoms, schedule an eye exam with a diabetic eye doctor as soon as possible.
