Wearing contact lenses can seem overwhelming in the beginning — especially when it comes to putting them in.
But don’t worry. Just follow these step by step instructions on how to put your contact lenses in safely.
Step one: Thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. This is a very important step!
Touching your eyes or contact lenses with unwashed fingers can lead to infection, so make sure your hands are clean before you put your contacts in. Avoid soaps that contain extra oils or fragrances, as they can stick to the surface of a lens.
After washing, dry your hands with a clean, lint-free cloth.
Step two: Remove your contact lenses from their storage case. If you have different prescriptions in each eye, check the packaging to make sure you’re using the correct contact.
Try to start with the same eye every time you put your contacts in or take them out. This way, you can’t get the lenses confused with each other.
Once you’ve removed the contact lens from its case, place it on the tip of your index finger on your dominant hand.
Step three: Rinse the lens with contact lens solution. This removes debris and helps it stick to your eye better. If you drop the lens at any time, rinse it with solution again before you place it on your eye.
Step four: Inspect the lens for problems. Look over the lens and check for any damage, tears or smudges. You should also use this time to make sure the lens isn’t flipped inside-out.
A contact lens should make a perfect bowl shape. If the edges of the lens seem to curve over or create a “lip,” it’s inside out. Simply reverse the lens to get it back to its normal shape.
Step five: Put in the contact lens. Hold your upper eyelid open with your non-dominant hand. Use the middle or ring finger on your dominant hand to pull down your lower eyelid. Place the contact lens on your eyeball.
Once you’ve done this, let go of your eyelids. Blink a few times and roll your eyes around until the contact lens settles comfortably in the eye’s center. Repeat these steps on the other eye.
At this point, the contact lenses should feel comfortable and your vision should be clear. Practice these steps every day. Before you know it, you’ll be a contact lens pro!
