Which eye doctors accept vision insurance?
Do all eye doctors take vision insurance? First, it depends on the type of “eye doctor” you’re going to visit.
An optometrist is an eye specialist who can determine your vision needs, write prescriptions accordingly and refer you to a specialist as needed. Most, but not all, optometrists accept vision insurance.
Questions to ask: Does your optometrist take your particular vision insurance? Can you get reimbursed through your vision insurance for seeing your optometrist if he isn't a preferred provider on your plan?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who specializes in eye care, and your medical insurance — not your vision insurance — would be used to cover an ophthalmology visit.

Should I see an optometrist or ophthalmologist?
For your annual eye exam, you should see an optometrist. If your optometrist sees anything concerning during their examination, they will refer you to an eye specialist or an ophthalmologist.

What does vision insurance usually cover?
Vision insurance covers most (if not all) of the cost of routine eye exams and corrective lenses (including eyeglasses and contact lenses). Some plans offer discounts or reduced prices on LASIK eye surgery, but vision insurance will not cover treatment for eye disease.
Book an eye exam with an optometrist who accepts your vision insurance and you are on your way.
If your optometrist discovers you have glaucoma, cataracts or another eye condition that can hinder your vision, your optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist or other eye specialist, where you will use your medical insurance.
